On a train, the engine is the first car, with the power to propel the rest of the train forward and the caboose is the last car, usually painted red, but sometimes painted in colors to match the engine at the front of the train.

Before the 1980s the purpose of the caboose was to provide a rolling headquarters for the train’s conductor, brakemen, and crew by providing shelter to sleep and a place to keep records. This team kept the train on track by handling switching or inspecting the train for problems, such as braking issues, shifting loads, broken or dragging equipment, overheated axle bearings and derailment threats.
